Tadoku/Extensive Reading Resources

多読, or extensive reading, is a way to read Japanese books by reading a wide selection of books that are personally enjoyable at a comfortable level.  Many students are eager to read in Japanese, so tadoku has been gaining in popularity.  Here are some links to get you started!

Useful Resources from Universities

UCLA Extensive Reading Collection
UCLA has in their collection a great number of readings split by level for ease of use by the reader.  Very useful for those who may not know where to start!

USC Tadoku
USC has made their own tadoku readings that you can print out and use for your classroom!

Children’s stories:

NHK for school
Provides videos of popular children’s stories, together with a script that accompanies the video as it plays.  Well produced stories and easy to navigate!

Huku Musume
Provides children’s stories.  This site is great because you can read stories as picture books or listen to an audio recording as you read along.  There is also a ton of content!
How to use the site:
-Picture book stories: Navigate using the menu on the left.  You can find stories in picture book format (click on the link under はじめての方はこちら.  On the next page, you can find newly added books on the top of the page and click on their 絵本版, or you can further browse the different categories of books).
-1 story a day: You can also find more than 350 stories, enough to read one story a day!  From the link above (top page), click on any link under まいにちの童話, then on the next page click on any picture (they each correspond to a month of the year).  Finally, click on any story title to find the story together with an audio recording and the written script.

International Children’s Library
This site provides stories from all around the world, not only Japan.  This collection uses the actual storybook pages, and so are great as authentic resources!
How to use the site:
-On the top left menu of the home page, click on Read Books.  In the next page look at the box in the middle (surrounded by buttons).  Where it says “Show [Any language] books” use the pulldown menu to select Japanese.  Pick any Japanese book from the list.

Because extensive reading continues to grow in popularity, we will continue to share more resources for you!
