多読, or extensive reading, is a way to
read Japanese books by reading a wide selection of books that are personally
enjoyable at a comfortable level. Many
students are eager to read in Japanese, so tadoku has been gaining in
popularity. Here are some links to get
you started!
General Information about Tadoku:

This is a must-visit website for those interested
in tadoku!

This book provides an in-depth explanation of
using tadoku in the classroom!

This provides an overview of intensive and
extensive reading.
Useful Resources from Universities
UCLA Extensive Reading Collection
UCLA has in their collection a great number of
readings split by level for ease of use by the reader. Very useful for those who may not know where
to start!
USC Tadoku
USC has made their own tadoku readings that you
can print out and use for your classroom!
Children’s stories:
NHK for school
Provides videos of popular children’s stories,
together with a script that accompanies the video as it plays. Well produced stories and easy to navigate!
Huku Musume
Provides children’s stories. This site is great because you can read
stories as picture books or listen to an audio recording as you read along. There is also a ton of content!
How to use
the site:
-Picture
book stories: Navigate using the menu on the left. You can find stories in picture book format (click
on the link under はじめての方はこちら. On the
next page, you can find newly added books on the top of the page and click on
their 絵本版, or you can further browse the different categories of
books).
-1 story a
day: You can also find more than 350 stories, enough to read one story a
day! From the link above (top page), click
on any link under まいにちの童話, then on the next page click on any picture (they
each correspond to a month of the year).
Finally, click on any story title to find the story together with an
audio recording and the written script.
International Children’s Library
This site provides stories from all around the
world, not only Japan. This collection
uses the actual storybook pages, and so are great as authentic resources!
How to use
the site:
-On the top left menu of the home page, click on
Read Books. In the next page look at the
box in the middle (surrounded by buttons).
Where it says “Show [Any language] books” use the pulldown menu to
select Japanese. Pick any Japanese book
from the list.
